Hobart Socialist Alliance election launch – “Workers in Australia need a party of their own”

A long banner reading “Another Australia is possible” will be held on Salamanca lawns in Hobart at 11:30am on Saturday November 3 as part of the Socialist Alliance election launch. Federal election candidates for Denison and Franklin will address supporters, explaining why workers need to support the grassroots party.

Mathew Holloway, Socialist Alliance candidate for Franklin, will speak about the need to vote Howard out, but also the need for an alternative to the ALP, which he says “has lost touch with workers”. “Working people need a party of our own,” Holloway said, “One that will repeal all the anti-worker laws like Workchoices and start to address the growing divide between rich and poor. We stand for full public funding for health, education, childcare and aged care services,” Holloway said.

Susan Austin, Socialist Alliance candidate for Denison, will explain how urgent measures need to be taken to address climate change and why we need to aim for a 60% reduction in emissions by 2020 and a 90% reduction by 2030. “We need to put the energy industry back into public hands and make a dramatic turn to renewables”, Austin said. She will also call for the Australian troops to be brought home from Iraq and Afghanistan.

Melanie Barnes, a young member of Socialist Alliance, will speak about the Socialist Alliance’s support for actions like this week’s student walk-out against the pulp mill, which allow young people the opportunity to express their opinions. She will also explain why Socialist Alliance proposes lowering the voting age to 16, and has put forward many young candidates around the country.
