Election Campaigning Update

Hi all,
There are only 2 weeks and 2 days to go before Australians head to the polls to elect a new national government. We are doing all that we can to try and make sure that people vote for alternative parties that will stand up for the environment and the needs of ordinary people. The campaign for Mel Barnes, our Socialist Alliance candidate in Denison, continues to go well. Lots of people are out letterboxing for us, and many have pitched in to help fund some TV ads. Mel spoke at a GLBTI rights forum on Tuesday night and has a long list of public speaking engagements between now and the elections.

Mel attended a demonstration today against the proposed plan to burn native forests for power. As a dedicated climate change activist, Mel is also proud to see that the Vote Climate website www.voteclimate.org.au has recommended a vote for the Socialist Alliance, rating it as the only party with policies that might stop runaway climate change and that adopt a climate emergency response. Read the short Green Left article about it here: http://www.greenleft.org.au/node/44996 or you can read our climate charter here: http://www.socialist-alliance.org/page.php?page=674.

Have you signed up to her `Mel Barnes for Denison' facebook page? Can you spare a few hours to help with some letterboxing? Can you spare $50 or $100 to help get her TV ad on the air in more timeslots? Thanks to all those who already have. We are also looking for more polling day volunteers. Can you spare a few hours to hand out our material at your local booth on polling day? Please email me at hobart@socialist-alliance.org or phone Mel on 0423 978 518 if you can help. You can also donate online at http://www.socialist-alliance.org/page.php?page=268. Also we will be putting on a fundraising gig at the Alley Cat in North Hobart on Thursday August 19th, so please note it in your diary and we'll send out more details when they are confirmed.

In solidarity,

Susan Austin
